What first comes to mind when I think of our experience at the Mills House Hotel is “What a Place!”

The Mills House Hotel

The Mills House Hotel has a long history, dating back to the early 1800’s.  It has welcomed guests in Charleston in an extraordinary and elegant manner, and has been called, “The finest hotel south of New York City.”  The entire hotel was rebuilt in its antebellum fashion in the late 1960’s and now it is a mix of Victorian charm and modern conveniences.

At the Mills House Hotel, we were able to experience their renowned  traditional southern hospitality.  Every need we had during our four night visit was met quickly and enthusiastically.  We were even delighted that they have a “house stroller” to lend guests taking walking tours or shopping downtown.  Every staff member we crossed paths with was pleasant, helpful, and seeking to meet our needs in any way they could.   We were fortunate enough to have an opportunity to meet with Wendy Ellis, Director of Sales and Marketing.  Wendy exemplified the personable, professional, knowledgeable qualities the Mills House Hotel must seek in its employees.  All during the coordination of our visit, as well as in person, Wendy was polite, friendly and most helpful.  She’s wonderful to talk with and work with, and we enjoyed our encounters with her.

The Mills House Hotel

The atmosphere of the hotel is amazing, certainly giving the feel of an antebellum mansion.  Beautiful antiques adorn the lobby, restaurants and guest rooms/suites.  Our suite was delightfully decorated in Victorian style, but without being “overdone.”  Although there were antiques and beautiful furnishings throughout, I didn’t worry once about the girls breaking anything.  I suppose when beautiful knick-knacks are placed upon large and sturdy pieces of furniture, they seem less vulnerable. Our suite was comfortable in every manner imaginable.  The thermostat was controlled in our room, allowing us to set the temperature to whatever level we wished.  The pillows, linens, blankets and comforters were much higher quality than your typical hotel.  Izzy especially enjoyed relaxing in the fluffy white robe provided for use during our stay.

The combination of excellent service and incredible atmosphere make the Mills House Hotel a wonderful place to be.  It’s no wonder that it is featured on the  Condé Nast Traveler’s Gold List of World’s Best Hotels.  It has certainly gained top listing for resorts on the Family Travel Reviews “Best of the Best” list.

Travel Reviews can recommend without hesitation The Mills House Hotel as a wonderful family place.  It takes a little more of a travel budget to stay at the Mills House, but it is well worth it.  It will definitely provide memories that will last a lifetime.

Also as a note of interest: The Mills House Hotel is a Holiday Inn property.  As they are a little more expensive than the typical Holiday Inn, they don’t mention the affiliation in every advertisement, but it does give the benefit of Holiday Inn’s “Kids Eat Free” menu in their restaurant!
