Five Great London Places for Kids

Although London is often seen as the financial and political centre of the UK, it is sometimes forgotten that it also offers a great day out for the family, and especially for the children.

The following are some of the best places to visit in London if you have children and also offer a great opportunity to find the child within yourself:

London Zoo

One of the world’s oldest zoos which opened in 1828, London Zoo houses nearly twenty thousand animals. Although initially it was opened as a scientific zoo, it has since become a great day out for all the family. There are not many places where you can visit a rain forest, get close up to penguins and view the undersea world all in one day, but at the London Zoo, you can do all that and a great deal more.

The Tower of London

Perhaps best known for its somewhat gory past, the Tower of London is an excellent place to visit for families with children – boys especially will probably appreciate its macabre past. Although its history may appeal to adults, children will the famous Tower Ravens which are an ever present, as well as the Yeoman Warders in their full dress, who guard the Tower. Of course, the Tower of London is the home of the Crown Jewels, an incredible display of Royal Jewellery. There are special family tickets available and lots of special family events such as the Yeoman Warder tours.

The Science Museum

Although kids may claim to dislike science, most are fascinated by it without even knowing. Unlike stuffy old fashioned museums, the Science Museum has found new and exciting ways to bring science to life in an entertaining way. Two of its most popular features are the cinemas. The IMAX cinema is a 3D cinema showing science films, both set in outer space and under our seas. The 4D cinema takes this one step further and allows you the unusual sensation of being able not only to see a moon landing, but to actually smell it. What a great way to entertain the kids whilst educating them at the same time.

With over 250 years of history, Hamleys is the world’s oldest, and one of its largest, toy shops. The perfect place for children of all ages, as well as many adults, it attracts over five million visitors each year. Its seven floors each have a dedicated category to make it easy to find exactly what you are looking for. From traditional toys to digital toys for children, Hamleys has something to keep all ages entertained.

Rowing in Hyde Park

With a wide range of major tourist attractions, London’s great outdoor sites are sometimes overlooked, especially those designed for pure pleasure. One of the best of these, on a warm spring or summer day, is Hyde Park. One of its most popular attractions is the Serpentine which was created in 1730. A leisurely row on this magnificent lake is the perfect way to spend a sunny afternoon in our capital city.

For a great family destination, especially if you have kids, London offers a wide range of activities for the young, and the young at heart and if you’re in need of some rest and relaxation – there’s an abundance of London hotel suites to escape the bustle.
