Having a tropical climate, Vietnam sees its share of heavy rainfall and scorching heat. The weather conditions vary in different regions, though. The northern mountains can freeze with snow, while southern rice paddies can suffer in the scorching heat. Two monsoons govern Vietnam’s climate. The winter monsoon visits the North-east between October and March, so expect chilly winds at this time. There can be violent storms in July. Expect heat and humidity in the summer months of May to October.
Thus, it is best to visit the north – including Halong Bay – in April or May, while the south is favourable from November to February because it is cooler at that time. Take note that some areas have virtually the same weather the whole year. The city of Hue features a misty, romantic atmosphere due to constant drizzles, although it can sometimes get very hot from February to August. The Mekong Delta, on the other hand, can be very hot most of the time.
